MEET YOUR COORDINATOR
Jerry Neel
US Navy
I started doing Silkies in 2019 when I was still in Arizona. I was a regular visitor to “1912 Brewing” in Tucson and the owner (a Marine of course) told me about these Vet hikes where everyone wore short shorts and talked smack to each other as they walked for a few hours on a Saturday. I like short shorts AND Vets so my curiosity was piqued and in October 2019 I did my first Silkies in Tucson, talked a couple of my Air Force buddies into joining me. I knew I had stumbled onto something special and was impressed by how Luis Vasquez had put it together. What an absolute blast. Moved to Dallas in 2020, attended the DFW hikes and then in 2023 actually got involved with helping.
I’m an avid reader and enjoy staying in shape (so the Silkies fit a little better). I’m a Navy vet and my son is currently Navy (he joined me for Galveston this year as his first hike). Once you’ve left active duty there’s an itch between your shoulder blades to be scratched and IW provides that back scratcher for those hard-to-reach places. I’m honored to be able to help where I can.
