MEET YOUR COORDINATOR
Ken Hacker
US Marine Corps
Here’s the text with corrections for spelling and grammar:
I observed IW from afar for many years, mainly because life had me busy in other directions. When I finally gave in to one of my closest friends and went, I immediately observed the effects on the target. Recognizing that it wasn’t necessarily the medicine I needed per se, I wholeheartedly knew that it would allow me to apply my strengths to contribute and support the mission of a great organization. That in itself is my medicine.
Being asked to be a part of the leadership of this organization was humbling and still is. I enjoy carrying this mission forward and helping it evolve. Being able to look into the eyes of a fellow Veteran and seeing a spark that reignites the fire that reminds them of who they are and what they have done… it’s just epic. Those who have known death and have almost kissed her know that light doesn’t shine in that place. If you are lucky enough to provide a lifeline to someone and bring them back from that place, you should take that challenge every time. I have personally seen this organization do just that.
20 years Marine Corps, 15+ years Fire/EMS, rodeo committees, VFW, American Legion, and numerous other non-profit organizations…all things my therapist smirks and points to when I tell her I don’t like people. It would appear I do in fact live a life to serve as the unrefined ambivert I am.
There’s not much in regard to who I am. I’m a native Texan who enjoys hunting, fishing, and putting my booger hook on anything with a bang switch. I get involved in rodeo any way I can and I’ll always bleed burnt orange, Hook ‘Em!
If you’re on the fence about whether or not to attend one of our events, all I can say is, what do you have to lose? I get it. I know it isn’t for everyone, and at a quick glance, it looks like it can be a lot, but take a chance. Who knows, you may just find yourself realizing that you never lost that purpose you had.
